Researchers at University of Wroclaw in Poland who carried out the experiment believe the seasonal variation may have an impact on mate choice and on levels of adultery.

There is no clear explanation for the variation, but the researchers say one theory is that fewer female bodies are on display in the winter, so the rarity makes them more attractive.

The study has been published in the journal Perception.

The researchers also tested how attractive the men in the study found their own partner. The results showed the same seasonal pattern, with a peak in autumn and winter. But when the men were asked to rate their own attractiveness, there was no seasonal variation.

An Australian researcher has warned online daters to be cautious of witty emails, as they don’t lead to love.

Relationships psychologist Matthew Bambling from Queensland University of Technology had interviewed more than 100 Internet daters and found that women involved in Internet dating quickly formed emotional attachments to incompatible people whom they had not even met in real life.

And when they meet reality could fall far short of expectations.

“It’s easy to forget what is it about other people that really attracts us,” Brisbane Times quoted Bambling, as saying.

A team of Canadian and European researchers have identified a gene called Lrh1 with the potential to both regulate and block ovulation.

“Our findings demonstrate that the Lrh1 gene is essential in regulating ovulation,” said Bruce D. Murphy, director the Animal Research Centre at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and an adjunct professor of and obstetrics and gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universite de Montreal.
